Jack Ma: the one who opened Alibaba's cave
Jack Ma (马云, Ma Yun in Chinese) is a legend in China. Many people may wonder how he gets his success and fortune from? In fact, his early years were not so smooth, even can be seen as a failure. Jack Ma was born born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China. His parents were traditional musician-storytellers. He failed the university entrance exam three times in a row, and finally attended Hangzhou Teacher's Institute (currently known as Hangzhou Normal University). He graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in English. He started his career as an English teacher in University, a job having no relation with his later success. During a journey in the USA, in 1995, Ma had a first contact with the Internet and was fascinated by this virtual world. In 1999, Ma created Alibaba in his apartment with a group of 17 friends. Although Jack Ma has never actually written a line of code nor made one sale to a customer, he seized the opportunity of the emerging power of the Internet and created his own e-commerce empire.
Singles Day: the Chinese Black Friday and Ciber-Monday all in one
Every year’s November 11th (11.11) is the Singles Day in China, a festival dedicated to all the single people. Yet Jack Ma, with his giant e-commerce group Alibaba has given this day a whole new sense - an annual shopping carnival of the whole China.
When I say it’s a carnival, then it is a carnival where Chinese people try their best to shop as many things as they can at this day. What’s more, to get the thing that they want, which is usually with a limited quantity, people would sit in front of their PC half an hour before November 11th, so that they could be ready for the “bloody” shopping time. Usually, the second when the shopping carnival begins, many popular goods have already been swept away.
A record of $14.3 billion sales (an increase of more than 60% from last year) in 24 hours proves the fanaticism of Chinese people towards this shopping event. This also shows the strong buying power of Chinese consumers who keep refreshing the sales record for Alibaba. We can hardly say that it’s Jack Ma who has fulfilled the shopping desire of Chinese people, or is it Chinese consumers who have created the success of Jack Ma.
